John Knowles is a famous American novelist. John Knowles was born on September 16, 1926 in Fairmont, West Virginia to father James M. Knowles, a purchasing agent, and mother Mary Beatrice Shea Knowles, and died on November 29, 2001 at the age of 75.
From 1940 to 1942, John Knowles attended Oyster Bay High School in Oyster Bay, New York. He then transferred to Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and graduated in 1945. John Knowles explains that his novel, A Separate Peace, is a reflection of the experiences he had while at Philips Exeter Academy. Following his graduation from the academy, Knowles attended the U.S. Army Air Force's Aviation Cadet program for eight months. He then left and attended Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and graduated in 1949. During his time at Yale, Knowles wrote stories that were featured in the school's humor magazine, The Yale Record. During his sophomore, junior, and senior year at Yale, Knowles was an active member of the board for The Yale Daily News. Knowles was a member of the varsity swim team and during his sophomore year, he broke one of the school's swimming records. Following his graduation from Yale, Knowles became a reporter for a Connecticut newspaper, The Hartford Courant. In 1952 he left his position and became a self-employed, freelance writer.
In addition to A Separate Peace, John Knowles has written Morning in Antibes, Double Vision: American Thoughts Abroad, Indian Summer, The Paragon, and the sequel to A Separate Peace, Peace Breaks out.
