"It wasn't the cider which made me surpass myself, it was this liberation we had torn from the gray encroachments of 1943, the escape we had concocted, this afternoon of momentary, illusory, special and separate peace"-Gene (page 128)
A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a historical fiction novel that takes place during World War II. The main character, Gene, is an introverted, intelligent student. His best friend, Phineas, is the complete opposite; he is an optimistic and daring athlete ready for any challenge that could be thrown his way. Gene is constantly searching for something unique and special about himself. He wants to make a lasting impression on the world and be someone that everyone remembers; just like Phineas. Phineas is a talented athlete and an overall "perfect" person who everyone looks up to. Gene would do anything to be just like Phineas, even replacing him entirely. Throughout his incredible journey, Gene learns a valuable lesson: you never know how good you have it until it's gone.
